Disney’s Major Restructuring Hits Marvel Studios, Potentially Eliminating 1,000 Jobs

Disney is undergoing a significant corporate “restructuring,” which often translates to widespread layoffs. This initiative is now directly affecting Marvel Studios, with reports from Forbes indicating that as many as 1,000 positions could be eliminated.

The changes are being driven by Disney’s new leadership under Josh D’Amaro, who took the helm in March. The company’s focus is on streamlining operations, reducing duplicated roles, and consolidating marketing efforts into a single division. The marketing department has already been identified as one of the most heavily impacted areas.

However, Marvel appears to be bearing the brunt of these cuts, with layoffs affecting offices in both New York and Burbank. Nearly every division within Marvel, from film and television to comics, finance, and legal, is experiencing job losses. Notably, a significant portion of Marvel Studios’ award-winning visual development team has reportedly been let go.

This comes at a time when Marvel has been facing challenges with declining public interest and increasingly costly productions since the release of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. The company’s strategy for re-engaging audiences remains unclear, and these layoffs are expected to further complicate that effort. It’s possible that Disney is seeking to scale down Marvel’s operations to better align with current levels of audience engagement.

The full impact on upcoming projects is yet to be determined. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” scheduled for a July release, is reportedly nearing completion. However, the status of “Avengers: Doomsday,” slated for a December release, is uncertain. It’s clear that Marvel is entering a considerably more challenging period.
