The sequel to the Will Smith-starring film I Am Legend has taken a significant step towards reality. The follow-up to the 2007 movie was first confirmed in 2024, with discussions revolving around Will Smith’s return in some capacity, alongside Michael B. Jordan as the film’s lead.
New information has now emerged regarding the film’s director. Collider spoke with Steven Caple Jr., who confirmed his involvement in directing the project for Warner Bros. Caple Jr. is also engaged with several projects at Paramount and is currently working on the Netflix remake of Man on Fire. While the exact placement of I Am Legend 2 within his busy schedule remains unclear, the film is officially in development.
Akiva Goldsman, the screenwriter of the original film, is also returning for the sequel. This might not be as surprising to some viewers as Smith’s potential comeback. However, it has been explained that for the sequel, the filmmakers will be utilizing the alternate ending of the original movie, which more closely aligned with the conclusion of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel. Instead of a glorious departure, Smith’s character was destined to live with the revelation that the monsters he had learned to despise were not mindless killing machines, but people who had evolved as a society following humanity’s downfall. It will be intriguing to see how this theme is explored in the sequel, set approximately twenty years later.
