Victor Wembanyama Clinches Defensive Player of the Year Award with a Perfect Score

Victor Wembanyama, the towering center for the San Antonio Spurs, has been crowned the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year. At just 22 years old, he is now the youngest player to achieve this prestigious accolade. Although he was not eligible for the award last year due to an injury that limited his playing time and prevented him from meeting the minimum game requirement, this year’s victory solidifies his defensive prowess.

Dubbed the ‘French alien’ for his extraordinary 2.21-meter height, the tallest in the league, Wembanyama has consistently led the league in blocks for three consecutive seasons. His career total stands at an impressive 627 blocks over his three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. Furthermore, his remarkable performance has earned him a nomination for the MVP award, alongside other contenders like Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The other finalists, Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Ausar Thompson of the Detroit Pistons, stood no chance. In a historic first for the NBA, Wembanyama received 100% of the Defensive Player of the Year votes, marking the first time this award has been decided unanimously.

This unanimous decision is a rare feat in the NBA. No other defensive player has ever secured 100% of the votes, and no one has achieved this at a younger age than Wembanyama. His exceptional season also saw him win the Rookie of the Year award, placing him in elite company with only Michael Jordan and David Robinson having previously won both awards.

Achieving a perfect 100% of the votes is uncommon across most NBA awards. Stephen Curry’s MVP win in 2016 with a unanimous vote is a notable exception. Interestingly, the only other player in the last decade to achieve this level of consensus voting was Wembanyama himself, when he secured the Rookie of the Year title in 2024.

Key Highlights:

  • Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs center, named Defensive Player of the Year.

  • Led the league in blocks for three consecutive seasons.

  • Previously won Rookie of the Year with a unanimous vote.
